Connecting the Dots Between Symptoms, Labs, and Lifestyle
Your labs came back normal. Your doctor said everything looks fine. And yet you still feel exhausted by 3pm, bloated after meals, or just... off, in a way you can't quite explain.
One of the most common things I hear in practice is: "My labs are normal, but I know something isn't right."
Some people come to me because they are exhausted despite sleeping. Others feel like they don't recognize their body anymore. Others are frustrated because they are eating healthier than ever, yet their cholesterol, weight, or HbA1c continue to rise.
Nearly all of them have wondered at some point: "Am I missing something?"
The answer is often yes, but it is rarely just one thing.
If you've typed "why do my labs say normal but I don't feel well" into Google more than once, you're not alone.
This is a genuinely disorienting place to be.
When your body is clearly telling you something isn't right, but every piece of paper says otherwise, it's easy to start questioning yourself or wondering if you're somehow imagining the problem.
You're not.
More often, it simply means that nobody has had the opportunity to step back and look at the bigger picture yet.
Here's what "normal" actually means on a lab report, what it can leave out, and how we look at that same set of labs through a different lens, one that's meant to work alongside your medical care, not around it.
What It Means to Have Normal Labs But Still Have Symptoms
Every lab value on your results page comes with a reference range, and it's easy to assume that range represents "optimal." It doesn't.
Reference ranges are built to catch disease. They're not built to define optimal function. They're drawn from broad population data, often a wide cross-section of people, some of whom are already dealing with the very issue the test is meant to catch. That means the range itself can be wider, and more forgiving, than what actually reflects a well-functioning body.
That's an incredibly useful tool. It's also a blunt one. A result can sit comfortably inside a wide "normal" range and still be far from where your body functions best, especially if that range was never designed to answer the question you're actually asking: why do I feel like this?
Think of it this way: a reference range is built to answer "is this dangerous right now?" It was never built to answer "is this optimal for how I want to feel?" Those are two different questions, and most of us only ever get an answer to the first one.

Why This Isn't About Your Doctor Getting It Wrong
This is worth saying plainly: standard screening labs are essential, and your doctor's job in ordering them is to rule out disease and catch anything urgent. That work saves lives, and it's not something we take lightly or attempt to replace.
The frustration so many people feel isn't a failure of their care. It's a mismatch between what standard screening is designed to do (rule out disease) and what someone with persistent, non-emergency symptoms actually needs (understanding a pattern, over time, across systems). A typical annual physical is built around efficiently screening a large number of patients for the most common, most urgent issues. It was never designed to have the time, or the mandate, to sit with one person's specific, complex picture for an hour or two and connect every thread.
Those are two different jobs. Both matter. Neither one replaces the other. Recognizing that difference is often the first real relief people feel, understanding that the mismatch is structural, not personal.
Sometimes the Missing Piece Is Connecting the Dots
One of the things I love most about functional nutrition is stepping back and looking at the bigger picture.
Our bodies don't function in isolated categories. Sleep influences blood sugar. Blood sugar influences energy. Energy influences movement. Movement influences muscle mass, and muscle mass influences metabolic health. Digestion, inflammation, hormones, stress, and nutrition are constantly communicating with one another the same way.
When I work with clients, I am rarely looking for one single root cause. More often, I am looking for patterns and connections between systems that may help explain why someone doesn't feel like themselves.
Sometimes it isn't one thing. Sometimes it is several small things that have gradually accumulated over time. A single number rarely tells the whole story on its own, this process of connecting the dots is what helps people make sense of symptoms that previously felt unrelated, and builds the fuller picture your symptoms have been pointing to the whole time.

What a Functional Lens Adds to the Same Labs
This is where root-cause work usually starts, not with new labs necessarily, but with a closer look at the ones you already have, alongside your symptoms, your history, and how things have trended over time.
A few examples of what that can look like:
● Fasting insulin, viewed as a trend rather than a single number, often shows patterns years before fasting glucose moves out of range at all
● A more complete thyroid evaluation, interpreted alongside symptoms and health history, may provide additional context and help guide conversations with your healthcare team
● Ferritin and iron studies, considered alongside fatigue, hair changes, or exercise recovery, not just "anemic or not"
● Inflammatory markers, read together with digestive symptoms rather than in isolation
None of this replaces a diagnosis. It's a different question asked of the same data: not "is this dangerous," but "does this help explain how you feel, and what can we actually do about it."
What this looks like in real life can vary tremendously from person to person. For example, I may work with someone who is:
● Skipping breakfast and relying on coffee to get through the morning
● Eating very little protein throughout the day
● Sleeping poorly due to stress
● Exercising consistently but struggling with recovery
● Eating healthy foods but experiencing persistent digestive symptoms
None of these things are inherently "bad." However, together they can create patterns that may contribute to fatigue, blood sugar fluctuations, digestive complaints, and changes in how someone feels day to day. Looking at these lifestyle factors alongside lab work often provides much more context than either one alone.
A client came to me who was concerned about rising cholesterol markers. Through individualized nutrition and lifestyle changes, she experienced meaningful improvements in her lipid profile and felt more empowered in conversations with her healthcare team regarding her options.
A Few Places This Gap Shows Up Most Often
● Thyroid function. A single TSH value can look unremarkable while a fuller panel, including antibodies, together with a detailed health history, tells a different story.
● Iron and ferritin. Fatigue and hair thinning can show up well before a level drops low enough to be flagged as anemia, and this can connect to several different systems that are starting to strain.
● Vitamin D. "In range" and "sufficient for how you actually want to feel" aren't always the same number, and this one, too, can connect to a range of symptoms.
● Blood sugar markers. Fasting glucose is often the last thing to shift, long after other signs have already appeared. Looking at a broader panel of metabolic markers can help catch this earlier, before it progresses into a bigger blood sugar issue.
Why Symptoms Matter
One of the biggest lessons I have learned, both personally and professionally, is that symptoms matter.
Fatigue. Brain fog. Digestive issues. Poor sleep. Cravings. Changes in body composition. These experiences are not "all in your head," nor are they something you simply have to accept as a normal part of aging or a busy life.
Symptoms are information. They are often your body's way of communicating that something deserves further attention. That doesn't necessarily mean something dangerous is happening. However, it may mean that your body is adapting to stressors, nutrient imbalances, blood sugar changes, inflammation, digestive dysfunction, or other factors that deserve a closer look.
I often tell clients that our bodies are incredibly resilient and adaptive. Symptoms are frequently signals that something upstream may need support.
Does This Mean I Shouldn't Trust My Labs?
Not at all. Your labs are accurate. What differs is the lens applied to interpreting them, and the questions being asked of that same, trustworthy data.
