One of the most common things I hear in practice is: "I know I'm stressed, but this feels like more than that."
It often is. Stress doesn't just affect your mood, it starts in your nervous system, and from there it touches nearly every system in your body.
Two Systems, One Job: Keeping You Alive
Your nervous system has two main branches that work in opposition to each other, and understanding both is the key to understanding why chronic stress feels the way it does.
The sympathetic nervous system is responsible for boosting alertness and readiness during moments of perceived stress, the classic "fight or flight" response. Think of the moment a scary movie jump-scares you and your heart races, that's your sympathetic nervous system firing.

Long before the modern world, this response gave us the strength, speed, and focus to survive a genuine physical threat. When it's triggered, your airways open, your pupils dilate, your heart rate and blood sugar rise, your digestion slows, and your bladder relaxes. Your body is rerouting energy toward immediate survival, and shutting down anything it doesn't need in the moment, digesting a meal, for instance, isn't useful while you're running from a threat.
How Your Nervous System Responds to Stress, and Why That Becomes a Problem
Your nervous system doesn't distinguish well between a true emergency and many of the stressors of everyday life. Road rage, a demanding day at work, financial stress, grief, overtraining, or simply not getting enough sleep can all activate the same stress response.

When your nervous system is responding to stress day after day without adequate recovery, the sympathetic ("fight-or-flight") response can become overactive.
Your body is well equipped to handle a single stressful event. The trouble comes when these triggers become chronic. Repeatedly activating the sympathetic nervous system means repeatedly signaling your body to keep your heart rate and blood sugar elevated, and your digestion slowed, which is part of why chronic stress so often shows up as dry mouth, constipation, or diarrhea alongside everything else.
The Other Half: Rest and Digest
Opposing the sympathetic nervous system is the parasympathetic nervous system, often called the "rest and digest" response. Roughly 75 percent of it travels through a single nerve, the vagus nerve.

● Unstable body temperature
● Irregular, heavy, or absent periods
● Poor digestion
None of these confirm chronic stress on their own, several have other possible explanations, but together, they're a pattern worth paying attention to.
A note on low mood specifically: stress-related low energy and agitation is real and common, but persistent low mood, hopelessness, or loss of interest in things you normally enjoy deserves its own conversation with a mental health professional, separate from anything covered here. Training your body back toward rest and digest starts with stress management, and I know that's easier said than done. You likely can't quit your job, take a month off, or manufacture more hours in the day, and you don't need one more thing on your to-do list.

The good news is that some of the most effective tools here take a few minutes, cost nothing, and work anywhere.
The Vagus Nerve Is Your Way In
The vagus nerve, the one carrying most of your parasympathetic nervous system, runs down the back of your throat. Activities that stimulate the back of the throat directly activate that nerve, and with it, your body's rest-and-digest response. That gives you a genuine, physical lever to pull, not just a suggestion to relax more.
Four Simple Techniques to Try
Try at least one of these for a few minutes before bed, after a stressful moment, or any time you need to come back down:
● Hum. Gently rest your tongue on the roof of your mouth and hum for 30 seconds to a minute. Works well right before bed, during a commercial break, or before you get out of the car at the end of the workday.
● Sing. In the shower, in the car, while making dinner, it doesn't matter where. Just pick songs that feel good, not ones that stir up more stress.
● Breathe on a count. Inhale through your nose for a count of 4, hold for 7, exhale for 8. Mind your posture so you can take a full breath. This activates the vagus nerve directly and also encourages blood flow that supports healing and relaxation.
● Do a body scan. Starting at your head and working down to your toes, consciously relax each muscle group in turn. Particularly useful on nights you can't fall asleep, or minutes before something nerve-wracking.
This Isn't About Eliminating Stress
None of this is about achieving a stress-free life, that's not a realistic goal for almost anyone. It's about giving your body real, regular opportunities to come out of a stress response, rather than staying there by default. With practice, these techniques can genuinely give you more control over how your body responds to stress, even when the stress itself doesn't go away.
A Common Pattern
Here's how this often plays out: someone initially focused almost entirely on nutrition. Meals were balanced. Exercise was consistent.
Yet blood sugar remained unpredictable, digestion was inconsistent, and fatigue persisted.
Looking at the broader picture revealed prolonged work-related stress and poor sleep quality.
